General Discussion / How does it fit through the door?
« Last post by BigFatGuy on November 18, 2019, 02:08:35 AM »
in learning how to play the game, my wife figured the Mark 1, stationary behind a door, guarding the computer, might be a good defensive tactic.

As it turns out, in opening the door, thanks to some bad dice rolls, she took out two commandos and shut the door on me again.

I found it hilarious that the Mark 1 is much bigger than the door. in case you wondered what the commandos saw:

Rules Discussion / Re: Snap Firing over low obstacles

Short of asking military or police trainers (which is actually a possibility) if you know any paintball or airsoft enthusiasts they might be able to give some insight.

I was going to say, I played paintball for years, and was always better going over a barricade than around it. primary reason is: your eye, your shoulder, and your gun are near the top of your body. Also, when you want to duck back down, gravity assists you.

However, in game terms, I'd say stacking the penalties would be a bad idea.

Rules Discussion / Re: Planetstorm flaws

1: using rulers sucks. The gameboard should be a hex grid
2: The BAP artillery was absurdly overpowered

We played a lot of pstorm, but it never felt as smooth or well put together as LOS to me.

Rules Discussion / What's the issue with diagonal facing and movement?
« Last post by BigFatGuy on November 15, 2019, 07:58:54 PM »
One of the old-school rulebooks mention that moving while facing diagonally was prone to abuse.

The new rules forbid moving diagonally... something I'm highly opposed to.

What is the issue? maybe I'm of too good a heart, but I can't figure it out.

Rules Discussion / Displaced Grenade Questions
« Last post by BigFatGuy on November 15, 2019, 07:34:51 PM »
On page 13 of the Beta rules, there is the classic "indirect grenade" diagram. The same basic diagram and rules as in the original ruleset.

I have two questions:

1: the nightmare is not in the commando's front arc. He can't throw the grenade without turning.

2: The rules really should allow sideways tossing of grenades, at a penalty of course. If you aren't picky about placement, a running commando shouldn't have too much trouble tossing a grenade into a room as he runs past.

3: Can the Nightmare target the commando with his Nachtmacher? (Does indirect grenade throwing work both ways?). I can imagine the nightmare would have enough visibility around the corner to give it a good try.

For the record, I did this conversion years before the Will Smith movie. :-)

Starshina Brondski leads a convict platoon into hopeless, suicidal mission after another.

In repairing his equipment, he took the arm from a destroyed Angel-Eater, and mounted it on his own shock armor.

In game terms, this was a single shock-armor trooper, with the command/leadership points of a starshina, and a single fire action to use either cannon. I don't remember the point totals (I wasn't the math nerd), but he didn't break the game as I recall.

Painting, Conversions and Modelling / My Black Empire Angel, in a short pause
« Last post by BigFatGuy on November 04, 2019, 12:44:23 AM »
I've been going through some old stuff, and found a conversion i never finished.

I'd been playing Planetstorm, and liked the idea of an Angel pausing to look around before storming off at a dead run again. One of the guys i used to play with was a math PHD, and had reverse-engineered the game's point system, so I had an idea that she would be a leader, and wanted her to do something other than storming forward blindly. edited to add: looking in the rulebook, she was a native leader, not one through hacked rules...

The shoulders are not nearly as strong as I'd hoped, the arms were so thin it was hard to pin them, but the overall effect was good.

I replaced her sword with a spear... I hate miniature-scale swords, they never look right.

I had ideas of using transparent blue plastic to make an energy shield for her arm, but never finished her.
