So, I just tried out the demo for the new 40k Space Marine game... which was not too bad... & it got me to dreaming about LoS.
I always thought Legions could make for a fantastic video game. PLENTY of armies & characters ready made for adaptation... After seeing the 40k game turn out ok, I would love to see someone pick up the license to develop LoS onto a console platform. It would probably be a great way to get the game some new recognition too, beyond the current [waning?] gaming crowd... which would only help make it more likely to see the tabletop game get back out there successfully too.

I agree..done right this would be awesome!
-
Well, a Console or PC game would take revnue to make.
A Facebook version would take less but might be a launch point.

What about going the usual route? Use success of the boardgame to license the IP to a game company.
-
Isnt there a turn based game you can import your own icons and rules into? I think some people are playing Warmachine or even Warhammer 40K with it. Its a top down view...I cant put my finger on the name
-
Turn it into a Facebook game! WOOOO! Well, maybe not "wooo" but it would sure get some exposure.

I did a VASSAL module a few years ago so I could play with some friends who lived back in the States (I am currently in Japan). Worked fairly well and could be used with hidden movement but still required a third person to GM the game for that. One-on-one it worked very well. Lots of short-cuts for movement and other stuff though.

Very cool! I'm downloading as I write this. Does it include any races beyond UNE and Machines?
-
I did a couple of images for the other races but kind of lost steam before getting them put in.
-
Vassal..thats it!!
-
First: read my post: "UPDATE"
Second: what is VASSAL?
Third: If LOS was a video game I would base it on Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon.

Let the fans develop LoS on Vassal. I would look at a ipad app. This game is simple enough to develop and add in AI component.
-
VASSAL is free and open source so I figure I should leave it up to anyone to adapt Legions of Steel for it. Hey, if they can put Steve Gibson style Dalecks and Imperial troops into it, I'm all for it.
If, and that is a big IF, LOS was going to be something like a first person shooter, then I would look to Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon. Apparently there is a group that calls themselves "NATO" who are programmers that mod these games, but I have not approached them. Second choice for an FPS would be CounterStrike.
As an RTS then I would look to something like Starcraft although I think the "Age of..." series is much more elegant but anachronistic in setting.
As discussed elsewhere, there are now talks of an iPad game. VASSAL will encounter some of the same problems with leadership and covering fire due to their interrupt nature.
-
An iPad version of the game is an exciting idea indeed... as long as it could be an iPhone game too ;)
A Starcraft style RTS is a great starting point - that would play out the surface battles of Planetstorm, although I don't think I'd want to see an LoS game that generates armies via building up forces & bases... maybe use the basic graphics structure of something like starcraft but have set scenarios/objectives & set armies per game.
How difficult would it be to map out underground complex tunnel scenarios but keep that isometric type of perspective? I think that a flat overhead look would be too basic/simplistic to be appealing - you would want to showcase the character designs as best as possible even on a tiny screen like an iPhone...
In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing how this project develops!!!
-
My discussions with the ringleader of these programmers is that they are not looking to do a 3/4 perspective with complex animations. What is being discussed is the illogical, but intuitive, top-down/side-view approach.

I would buy this twice if it was just a striaght port of the minatures rules. Turn based, fire options, alien races...(leadership gets a little fuzzy though). I would buy it 5 times (no kidding) if it was able to do multiplayer (co-op and head to head). Up to 4 people all playing at the same time!!!
Forzen Synapse does a nice implementation of real time/turn based/simultaneous actions. Worth a look for some good ideas. Really love how they do rockets and grenades. WTF Is... - Frozen Synapse ? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jJrUY27O0Y#ws) ro the website http://www.frozensynapse.com/. (http://www.frozensynapse.com/.)
Being able to do a muliplayer game where you can send your turns in by e-mail/server would be awesome on a stick.
Very excited about this and know several people that will be as well.

The aim is to make it play-and-pass in multiplayer mode. We are brainstorming how to handle covering and leadership without all the interrupts. Single player will start with you playing the Humans while the computer controls the Machines. That way the AI doesn't have to worry about using leadership (only defending against it). As the Machines move there will be a slight pause so that you can interrupt to take cover fire or use leadership.
There will be a bit of streamlining to make it more accessible to non-wargamers. They are still in the process of trying to play the game and suss out the rules. I have some feedback from them that I will look at and reply to this afternoon.
As for an RTS, I suppose it could be something like Dawn of War if there was the whole build, upgrade, expand thrust to it. However, if given the choice I would move away from that and do something different, for obvious reasons.
-
Wow, that Frozen Synapse looks incredible! I love the simple graphics of it, the raised 3d perspective is just enough... I can already visualize it with more appropriate LoS colour schemes and units. The complexity of options for the order chains & running sims before committing to the turn are great ideas, as well as being able to destroy terrain & the option of watching any other players played out games...
Perhaps leadership could be incorporated into a game like this as an increase to the weapon % chance to hit for firing, or extra range for movement. I can't see it being too choppy to have any remaining leadership used as an interrupt once you ran a planned turn out like in this game...
Any updates on the LoS game?
-
FS is nice - I will go buy it now lol
-
I just got 'Judge Dredd vs. Zombies' for my iphone this week - its very silly but a fun game & some level designs would look good in an LoS game...
The game is free for a limited time as far as I know, so anyone interested should check it out soon. Free = good!
-
Any latest updates on the status of the game/app development? I'm also wondering if the new concept art will be used for it?
-
Hey all,
Just a quick update here - an iPad/iPhone game app is still currently being developed for LoS, no word on when it may come to pass yet. Clark's connection he made while in China has returned to France & has a studio working on the project.
-
AWESOME.
I'll buy it sight unseen.
-
Keep your eyes peeled for potential announcements on this soon, everyone. I can't say anything more than that. ;)

You big tease!
