Working on some conversions - Machines Mark 1A1
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:52:40 PM »
Hey Guys...

I have been working with a guy that does 3D modeling and some rapid prototyping. I had him make a couple arms and a new Trident. I had an idea to make the Mark 1A1 fiend a base model for some conversions. Since he is a multipart and slightly more dynamic model (unlike the single piece Mark 1) he makes a good candidate.

Idea 1 - convert him to a regular Mark 1 with a more imposing trident and an arm that will support a scratch built Plasma X weapon. I have been working on some conversions but the "bio" parts of the NapalmX are tough.
Idea 2 -- convert a Mark 1 with two "Close Combat" weapons or different combinations of weapons. Essentially you could use the arms and scratch build weapons or even use other weapons that are already out there.

I will keep you updated once I have them in my hand.

Thoughts?

I'd make the prongs a lot beefier on the trident. Miniatures need some exaggeration or they break :(

For the Napalm, I think the most important thing is some sort of big-arse bayonet. The way to do tentacles would be to have them cast in metal and bend them into shape and glue - just IMO. Reaper Miniatures has a service for purchasing parts, I'm not sure they have any tentacles small enough though.

Personally I think it's a great idea, and I'd like to see more!

I'd love to see a conversion like this - I have always liked the M1A figure better than the original, but the original figure deserves an upgrade!

Well it looks like the modeling is done. I will have some examples and do some mock ups with some of the M1A1's I have onhand. As soon as I get them set up I will post.

The bigger trident is what I went with and its about 60 MM tall and should be pretty hefty. If not it can be bulked up or even changed completely. I didn't want to go "40K big" - Its far more hefty than the original and should still fit in with the rest of the range. You could also convert this trident to add more blades, a power cable or two etc.

The Napalm X presents a slightly different problem. It looks like it replaces the arm/hand of the Mark 1. I will check out Reapers site and some other bits places. I was thinking there are some Skaven rat tails that could work or perhaps a worm or something. The body cross section is "triangular" Its very cool but its kind of hard to make out the details on the Mark 1 as its so close to his body. Does anyone have a picture of one?

Once this is finalized you can order your own if you want. I dont make a penny, I just paid the modeler to do the arm designs. I did this as an experiment for my own game and my own miniatures.

Sorry...been going crazy at work. Its done and they are ready to order. I am ordering a set of arms and tridents today? If you want to see (and order them).

Information Below. Let me know what you think!!

The Trident is 60mm Tall and is in 2 different materials.
White Detail Material:  http://www.shapeways.com/model/307172/60mm_tall_monster_trident.html?gid=ug

Ultra Fine Detail:  http://www.shapeways.com/model/307198/10_monster_tridents_60mm_tall.html?gid=ug

Arms

There are a couple sets of arms, using multiple types of materials to give you a couple options in print quality and price ranges.  The Arm Bundles are in Ultra fine detail and White Strong and Polished.  The Polished will have slightly less detail, .2mm but should be adequate for the size of these models but will take slightly longer to make.  The Ultra fine is more expensive but goes to .1mm of detail.

The other material is the White Detail Material again, and can be purchased one at a time.

That looks pretty cool. Did you ever come up with a solution for the Napalm X arm?
Best Regards,
