Title: New site theme....
Post by: Kindred on July 20, 2015, 11:08:05 PM
Tryig to make the site a little more responsive/mobile friendly.

The old theme is not permanently gone, but we're going to try this one out for a little while...

Let me know if anything displays particularly oddly...

I like the new look!

Only initial critique would be that the 'News' bar is maybe a little difficult to read clearly, with the space graphic behind the lettering looking a little too noisy. If the text was a lighter shade, or if you reduced the opacity of the space graphic so that it is darker, the contrast between should be good.

I agree... better now? :)

All the links at the top are oddly spaced. Home Help and Game Info are pretty far apart.
Game Info and Search are closer together, but not overlapping.
Search and Media are also pretty far apart.
Media and Profile are pretty close together, but not overlapping.
Profile and My Messages are pretty far apart.
Messages and Links have the last letter 's' and the 'L' overlapping.
Links and Members are pretty far apart.
Members and Auctions & Sales are closer, but not overlapping.
Auctions & Sales and Logout have Sales and Logout overlapping. The first letter of each word is in the space location..

I'm on Win 7 Home Premium with SP1 and Auto Updates On using the latest version of Firefox. I double checked to make sure I didn't have Firefox set to magnify pages, it is at 100%. The links at the top don't look to have 'normal' spacing until I shrink things down to 67%, but everything else gets annoyingly small then. I would take a screen shot (is that the right word?) for you but I don't know how.
It doesn't seem to interfere with actually using the links though.
Other than that, I also like the new look.

You people with tiny monitors will be the death of me.... :P

not quite small enough to trigger the responsive/tablet view. but not wide enough for good spacing...  hrmm....  I'll think on what to do about it.

I am, however, noticing some icons (like the smileys) that need to be updated to remove a white border... ugh. I hate graphics.

Having just recently looked at the site for the first time in a while via a smartphone, I noticed that it displays very poorly on there. Most thread discussions seem to be getting cut off on the right side if I am looking at the site in the portrait configuration. If I tilt my phone to a landscape configuration, its better - but can you code it to adapt to mobile apps?

I also noted that the timestamp dates of each individual post don't show up at all, and if I was being nitpicky, I'd say the graphics for each Topic area, specifically the large grey circle that turns red when new posts are present, are much too large on mobile devices. I like the look of them very much, but they take up a very large portion of the screen.

Agreed. It's useable on mobile, but not friendly.

I wonder - if I could whip up some kind of cool icon in photoshop about the size of that grey circle or slightly smaller, would you be able to use it in that spot for that same function, Kindred?

Strange... the theme works great on my android...

It does my screen size only with no cut off and properly sizes and boxes....

I definitely don't get any problems like you describe.

To be clear, it's not terrible. It's just not ideal.

I am curious what you consider "ideal" :D

A forum, unlike a blog, has a lot of "STUFF" to deal with - but the current theme does deal with the display pretty well on most mobile devices, IMO. If there is a specific lack, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Additionally, this version of the forum software still uses tables in some locations - so, despite being responsive, there is some ways that it can only be optimized so much.
The next version is in RC right now - and is slightly better in most ways - but doesn't have any really nice themes yet.

Not sure if you made any tweaks or not, but the display seems to have generally improved on my iPhone screen. The discussion thread posts are not cut off any longer on the right side, although that is still happening when I look at other members profiles. I’ll try to post a pic of that when I can (or I’ll send to you via PM).

The time stamp is still missing from each individual post though, any way to tweak it to be included for mobile apps? I have a strong habit of checking when people made their posts on these kinds of message boards, it feels very weird to not be able to see it.

yeah, the theme does remove extraneous data for display on reduces screens....  I'll look at where the time could be added without distorting the view...

regarding user profiles... I would not be surprised. That section is still done in ugly tables.

I've held off doing much more customization to this theme since this is  2.0.X theme....  and we'll shortly be moving to the 2.1 version of the software -- thus would need a new theme anyway. :D

Sweet, I'm really looking forward to seeing a newer version of the site software + thematic upgrade! No worries on the minor quibbles really, if we're making the leap soon.

Yeah, it's fine. I like it less than some other forums on mobile, but after reflecting on what you said, it's nitpicking.

OK, despite my previous statement, I did make some tweaks to the theme...

including the fact that you should be able to see the date in the mobile/narrow view now.

I'm liking the thematic tweaks! Still looking forward to seeing what v2.1 is gonna look like  :)
